Abstract

487,611. Cutting or dividing glass. JORDAN, A. T., and LEVER, P. Feb. 1, 1937, Nos. 2883 and 33687. [Class 56] Relates to a machine for cutting-out spectacle lenses, watch glasses, or other shapes from a piece of glass clamped on a table which can be rotated, relatively to a glass cutter, a template being arranged to rotate synchronously with the work table and to guide a feeler that moves the cutter. According to the present invention, the template is supported on a spindle separate from that carrying the work table, and is attached to its spindle without clamping-nuts or screws so that it can be changed readily for another. For this purpose, a vertical spindle 14 terminates in a central spigot 54 and has one or more offset pins 55 which engage in corresponding holes formed in the templates 16. The work table 15 is carried by a vertical spindle 13, and the spindles 13, 14 are rotated in unison with one another by a handle 20. The spindle 14 is journalled in a carriage 21 which can be moved along guides 22, to and from the table 15, by a graduated handwheel 26 to vary the size of the article to be cut out of the work piece. The table 15 is faced with rubber 27, and the spindle 13 is hollow and accommodates a counter - pressure rod 28. A clamping-member 29 is carried by a pivoted arm 30 and is swung to and from the table 15 by a cam 31 rotated by a hand wheel 32. The arm 30 and the cam 31 are both pivoted on a vertical shaft 33 the lower end of which carries a bracket 34 that supports the counterpressure rod 28. Thus when the member 29 is lowered, the rod 28 is lifted simultaneously and the pressure on the two sides of the glass on the table 15 is balanced. A cutter 38 is pivoted on an arm 37 which also carries a pivoted feeler 39 that engages the template 16. The cutter and the feeler carry cranks which are connected by a link 42 in order to direct the cutter in accordance with the movement of the feeler. The arm 37. is pivoted to levers 43 which, in turn, are pivoted to the carriage 21, and a hand lever 45 enables the cutter to be swung in a vertical plane. When the lever 45 is depressed, the feeler 39 is moved into contact with the Lemplate 16, and continued movement of the lever brings the cutter into contact with the glass on the table 15. The handle 20 is then rotated to rotate the table 15 and the template.
