Abstract

487,403. Parchment paper. CLARK, G. M. (Paterson Parchment Paper Co.) Oct. 16, 1936, No. 28169. [Class 96] Impregnated, waterproof paper for wrapping &c. is made by parchmentizing the exterior surfaces, e.g. of cotton or alpha-cellulose paper lightly but sufficiently to resist disintegration by moisture whilst retaining the porous nature of the web, and leaving the interior fibres unparchmentized, and then impregnating the paper with a liquid, e.g. molten paraffin wax, which can solidify within the web. The paper is subjected to heat and slight pressure after waxing &c., and allowed to cool slowly whilst tightly wound, for parchmentizing may be used sulphuric acid, e.g. 55-56‹ BÚ., phosphoric acid, zinc chloride, &c. The raw paper may be loaded with titanium oxide &c., or sized, and the wax or like material may be medicated. The finished paper surface may he printed upon, or marked with a hot metal point.
