Abstract

487,085. Stapling. BOSTON WIRE STITCHER CO. March 19, 1937, No. 8207. Convention date, March 20, 1936. '[Class 89 (iii)] A stapling tool is provided with means whereby the driving stroke of the driver may be effected by either a single stroke or a succession of strokes of an operating lever, the mechanical advantage of the lever also being increased in the latter case, to adapt the tool for operating on hard or resistant workpieces. The tool, which is adapted to be held and operated by one hand, comprises a frame 3 with a finger hole 9, an anvil blade 13, a magazine 20, and an operating lever 70. The frame is adjustably secured to a base member 10 carrying the blade 13, and the magazine, which is pivoted in the frame at 21, comprises a channel member 20, Fig. 13, with flanges 22, a pair of staple-supporting rails 23, a pusher 24, and a gate 28 permitting loading from the front. The gate, Fig. 16, has lugs 29 pivoting in slots 30 in extensions 27 of the member 20, and is held locked, with recesses 31 engaging lugs 32 on the rails 23, by a spring 45. When locked, the gate causes the staple driver 35 to release a pawl 37 which, when the gate is open, holds back the staples s. The driver is operated by a reciprocating slide 40, an extension 43 of which engages a hole in the driver and is engaged by the spring 45 to hold the driver raised to an extent limited by a yoke member 46 connected to the extensions 27. The slide 40 is operated by a lever 50 which is pivoted at 54, is raised by a spring 61, and includes a member 52 having shoulders 57, 58 and an extension 60. The hand-lever 70 operates the lever 50 through one of two pawls 86, 87. If soft material is to be stapled, the pawl 86 occupies the position shown, with its nose 92 engaging the shoulder 57, so that a single stroke of the lever 70 imparts its full stroke to the driver 35. If hard material is to be dealt with, the pawl 86 is turned clockwise to inoperative position. Depression of the lever 70 then causes the pawl 87 to engage the shoulder 58, imparting part of its stroke to the driver. While the driver is held against return by a pawl 101 engaging a rack 100, the lever 70 is released and again depressed. The pawl 87 now engages the projection 60, imparting the remainder of its stroke to the driver. The rack 100 then passes below the pawl 101, so that the driver is free to rise under pressure of the spring 45 when the lever 70 is released. The spring 45 causes the magazine to swing down into engagement with the work on the anvil 13 when the lever 70 is first depressed. The lever 70 normally is held in raised position by a spring 79.
