Abstract

486,845. Ball or tube mills. MANDLE, H. H. Sept. 9, 1936, No. 3296/38. Divided out of 481,366. [Class 59] [Also in Group XVI] In a mill for producing metal powders in which the ground product is conveyed by a gas-stream to a sifter from which the coarse material is returned to the mill, a valve device is arranged in the path between the sifter and mill and above which the coarse material accumulates to a predetermined level, the valve being regulated to maintain the level constant, means being provided for enabling the level to be verified continuously during the operation of the mill. As shown, bronze powder is fed to the mill 1 by a feed screw 3 and the ground material is discharged by fan 9 through pipe 12 to cyclone 11, the air returning to the mill through pipe 13. The material deposited in cyclone 11 is discharged by a pocketed wheel 15 to a mechanical screening filter 16 which diverts the fine material through pipe 17 and wheel 18 to polishing drums 19 supplied with inert gas through pipes 37. The coarse material passes through pipe 20 and wheel 21 to a mixing tube 22 and is carried by the return air into the mill, the lighter particles being thrown farther up the mill than the heavier particles. The mill may be of tapering section having balls of different weights. The cyclone 11 is provided with a sight glass 14 and a sight glass may be provided at the valve 21 so that the speed of the pocketed wheels may be adjusted to provide a constant flow back to the mill, the speed of the screw 3 being adjusted so that the total quantity passing into the mill is constant. The feed wheels may be geared together. Instead of the fan 9 a centrifugal blower 26 is used to separate the coarse material and direct it through pipe 27 to feed wheel 21 whilst the fines are directed to the cyclone 11.
