Abstract

Boron fluoride is prepared by heating potassium borofluoride with boric oxide and sulphuric acid.ALSO:Low-boiling liquid paraffins are produced by alkylation of normally gaseous paraffins with normally gaseous olefines at about -50 to 10 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising boron fluoride, nickel, and hydrogen fluoride or water or both. Propane or butanes may be alkylated with propene, butenes, or ethylene by passing the hydrocarbon mixture with boron and hydrogen fluorides over finely divided nickel, if desired on a support, withdrawing liquid products, and treating the vapours to separate hydrocarbons and fluorides, the latter being recycled. The paraffins and olefines are preferably in the molecular ratio of 3 : 1. The products may be fractionated to yield gasoline of high anti-knock rating. The boron fluoride may be prepared by heating potassium, borofluoride with boric oxide and sulphuric acid. In examples, a liquefied mixture of isobutane and normal butenes or isobutene is introduced into an autoclave containing Ni, BF3, HF and some isobutane at 0 DEG C. to form mainly iso-octanes.
