Abstract

486,052. Partitions. HARRIS & SHELDON, Ltd., SANKEY & SONS, Ltd., J., and BUTLER, H. G. March 9, 1937, No. 6854. [Classes 20 (iii) and 20 (iv)] A panelled partition comprises a hollow or tubular transom, crossbar, or like member 5 adjustably secured between uprights 3 by a fixing-rod 13 which passes longitudinally through the member 5 with vertical clearance to allow of vertical adjustment of the member 5 relatively to the rod, and each end of the rod adjustably engages a vertical slot, or one of a series of vertically-spaced apertures, in the corresponding upright whereby the height of the rod in relation to the uprights may be varied. Each transom 5 is of rectangular cross-section and comprises a channel lower portion 6 which is slidable in the channel main portion. Both the upper and lower portions of the transom may be grooved to receive the edges of the adjacent panels 2. Each end of the transom may be closed by a sheet-metal plate 8 which is welded to the transom and is provided with a vertical slot 9 to allow passage for the rod 13. Each of the uprights 3 is provided, as shown in Fig. 5, with a shallow channel portion 11 which is engaged by the transom 5 and is provided with a groove 10 for receiving the panels 2. The grooved portion 10 of the upright is formed with a series of vertical slots 12, and each rod 13 is passed through the appropriate slots of adjacent uprights and is secured by nuts 14 screwed onto the threaded ends of the rod. In addition to the adjustability provided by the slots 12, the transom may be adjusted slightly in height by sliding it vertically relatively to the rod 13. The lower portion of the partition may be fitted with metal panels and the upper portion with glass panels.
