Abstract

A porous refractory and heat - insulating composition consists of an exfoliated material such as vermiculite, biotite, or zonolite, an organic fibrous temporary binder, and a mineral permanent binder. Animal hair or wool is the preferred fibre, but hemp, sisal, kapock, cotton or the like may be employed. Plastic fire clay is the permanent binder preferred; some or all of this may be substituted by bentonite, particularly where the composition is not exposed to high temperatures. Other additions specified are asbestos, and mineral, slag, or rock wool. The following example is typical of several; exfoliated vermiculite 60-75 per cent, plastic fire clay 5-25 per cent, Bentonite 5-15 per cent, hair 1/2 -2 per cent.
