Abstract
Calcium hydride is obtained by reducing calcium oxide with magnesium in an atmosphere of hydrogen the mixture being maintained at a temperature below 1100 DEG C., until the reduction of the calcium oxide is complete. According to one example a mixture of magnesium filings and dry calcium oxide is placed in a steel crucible which is placed in a vacuum-tight cylindrical retort. The retort is evacuated, filled with hydrogen and heated in an electric furnace, the temperature being raised gradually to 700 DEG C. in order to avoid a too sudden evolution of adsorbed hydrogen at 651 DEG C. Hydrogen is then supplied until the reaction is complete. The retort is preferably then heated to 800-900 DEG C. the retort being rotated or oscillated. According to another example calcium oxide is placed in a horizontal cylindrical retort filled with hydrogen and heated to 800 DEG C. A magnesium ingot is fused in a steel pipe occupying the central axis of the retort, this pipe being provided with a row of small holes in its upper part. The retort is given a rotating on oscillating movement to distribute the molten magnesium with the calcium oxide. The speed of rotation of the retort determines the amount of magnesium which contacts with the calcium oxide and this provides a means of controlling the reaction.
