Abstract

485,023. Mitering. RAWLINSON, H. Jan. 1, 1937, No. 43. [Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii)] A mitering - apparatus comprises two work-guides or fences A, A<1> pivotally mounted at a, a<1> adjacent the plane of cut and connected by equal links c, c<1> to a block C adapted to move in a path perpendicular to that plane, the arrangement being such that the fences and links form a hinged parallelogram and the path of the block bisects the angle between the fences, so that the angle between each fence and its link is equal to that of the mitered joint and is adjustable by moving the block in its path. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the block C slides in a slot b in a baseboard B to which the pivots a, a<1> of the channelsection fences A, A<1> are secured, and which also carries adjustable guides E for a saw F. The fences are adjusted by means of a template consisting of arms d, d<2> which are pivoted together and set to the desired angle of the mitered joint. The arm d is then held on the lower flange of the guide A by means of pins a<4>, a<5> which register with apertures in it, and the block C is adjusted until the link c lies under the arm d<2>. The angle of cut determined by the fences will then be half that between the links and the fences, that is, half that of the mitered joint. The saw F may be carried by a frame F<1> having a ball-race f<1> at its lower edge engaging a rail secured to the bottom of the sawing-slot in the table, so that it may be reciprocated horizontally. The saw is movable vertically on the end members of the frame, the saw handles being formed with slots through which they pass and provided with ball-races f<6> which engage them. Equal vertical movement of the two ends is ensured by two cords, each passing from the top of one handle to the underside of the other, over pulleys g<1>, g<2>. The saw blade is attached to levers f<9> pivoted to the saw handles and adjusted by screws f<8> to tension the saw.
