Abstract

<PICT:0484809/III/1> In the production of red lead from lower lead oxides, carbonate of lead, or white lead by passing the initial material through a rotary furnace in countercurrent to hot combustion product gases, as described in the parent Specification, the treated material is prevented from reaching the zone of combustion, as by effecting combustion in a zone at one end of the furnace and withdrawing the red lead at a point sufficiently distant from said end, or by effecting combustion in a separate chamber and conducting the resulting hot gases to the furnace. As described in the parent Specification, the heating gases may be brought into direct contact with the material, or be passed through separate closed flues within the furnace, the said flues comprising longitudinal channels in the furnace lining or a pipe running longitudinally through the centre of the furnace. In the form shown in Fig. 3, combustion gases from a burner 6 are passed through flues 17 located in the firebrick lining 2 of the furnace. Initial material is fed from a shoot 10, and red lead is discharged through apertures 14 situated say 15ft. from the lower end of the furnace. A firebrick ring 24 prevents the red lead passing the discharge point. The shell 1 of the furnace may be covered with heat insulating material 23.
