Abstract

484,730. Incendiary bombs. MOURLAQUE, G. A. Dec. 7, 1936, No. 33583. [Class 9 (i)] An incendiary bomb, more particularly intended to be dropped from aircraft, comprises a casing forming a receptacle for an inflammable fluid charge, a mechanical device for igniting the charge and a receptacle containing a gas under pressure, the ignition device being arranged so as to be operated by the fluid charge when the latter is forced out of the casing in a rearward direction by the gas released from the receptacle on impact of the bomb. As shown, the bomb comprises a casing A filled with an inflammable charge N, such as gasoline, alcohol or acetone, and containing a receptacle B filled with a gas under pressure. The neck of the receptacle, which is normally closed by a diaphragm b, is screwed into a union C<1> on the nose cap C, the bore in which is closed by a, disc O of lead &c. held in position by a ring P. Holes p in this ring register with passages c in the union C<1> A striker D adapted to slide in the bore in the nose cap is held in its inoperative position by a spring E, the spring and head of the striker being enclosed in a protecting cap F. The ignition device comprises a block G, which may be made of a combustible material such as celluloid, screwed into the part a and hollowed out at g to receive a spindle J having vanes j at its lower end. The upper end of this spindle carries an emery wheel I which, when caused to turn, rubs against the flints Q pressed into contact with the wheel by adjustable springs q. The chamber g communicates with the outside through passages H and is normally cut off from the inside of the casing by a diaphragm U of lead &c. The block G is formed at its lower end with passages in which are disposed the upper end s of a number of tubes S which are centred in the casing by a spider L and the lower free ends of which are situated near the passages c. A cap T covering the ignition device is removed when the bomb is to be used. The casing is also provided with hollow fins M open along their inner faces at m and filled with a combustible substance, such as resin. In operation, the striker D on impact perforates the diaphragms O and b and the gas under pressure escapes from the receptacle B through the passages c into the casing A so that the charge N is forced through the tubes S. The charge, now under pressure, breaks the diaphragm V and enters the chamber g causing the vaned spindle J and wheel I to rotate so that sparks are produced by the friction between the wheel and the flints Q. The charge leaves the chamber g through the passages H and is ignited by the sparks and bursts into flame as does also the combustible material in the fins M.
