Abstract

Thioglycollic acid salts are prepared (1) by heating a solution of thio-, or dithio-, diglycollic acid or a salt thereof with calcium hydrate and aluminium powder; (2) by first preparing rhodanic acid by reaction between monochloracetic acid and ammonium thiocyanate, and then boiling it with lime; (3) by boiling pseudo-thiohydantoin with lime and water. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 1,973,130.ALSO:Toilet depilatories are prepared by bringing together a mercaptan carboxylic acid, or a salt thereof with an excess of alkali sufficient to give a product having a pH value between 10 and 13. The mercaptan carboxylic acid may be produced by chemical reaction during the preparation of the depilatory. A suitable cream base with which the other ingredients may be incorporated is prepared by dispersing stearic alcohol containing 10 per cent of sulphonated stearic alcohol in water. According to examples: (1) calcium hydrate is added to the cream base, thioglycollic acid is then added at a temperature not above 60 DEG C., and finally chalk and perfume are added; (2) the sodium salt of dithiodiglycollic acid, calcium hydrate and aluminium powder are heated in water and the product diluted with a cream base; (3) rhodanic acid is first prepared by heating a mixture of monochloracetic acid and ammonium thiocyanate in water, and the precipitated acid is then boiled with lime to yield a solution of calcium thioglycollate which is cooled and added to a cream base; (4) thiolactic acid is used in place of thioglycollic acid in (1); (5) pseudo-thiohydantoin is boiled with lime and water and the resulting thioglycollic acid is mixed with a cream base.
