Abstract

483,195. Steering vehicles. MORRIS COMMERCIAL CARS, Ltd., and ROSE, P. G. June 24, 1937, No. 17570. [Class 79 (v)] In a vehicle having front and rear wheel steering mechanisms, the latter being disconnected from the former and locked when desired, the front wheel mechanism is connected to an operating part or arm 18 adapted to turn about a boss or spindle 24, Fig. 4, of the rear wheel mechanism, the said boss carrying a separate slidable clutch member 25 adapted either to lock the boss to the operating arm 18 for front and rear steering or to disconnect the boss from the arm and to engage a fixed clutch part 30 to lock the rear wheels against steering movement. The invention is shown applied to a vehicle of the kind described in Specification 481,005, [Group XXXII], comprising a median frame member 1 having independent axle arms 2 connected thereto by transverse pivots, the wheels being mounted on steering pivots 3 on the axle arms. The front wheels are connected for steering to bell-crank levers 5 coupled by a track-rod 7, one of the levers being actuated by the steering-gear through a draglink 6. The rear wheels are similarly connected for steering by links 17, bell-crank levers 13, 13a and a track-rod 16, the lever 13 being adapted either to be locked against steering movements or coupled to the arm 18 which is connected by linkage 9, 10, 12 to the front steering mechanism. The lever 13 is fixed to the boss or hollow spindle 24, Fig. 4, mounted on a fixed pin 19. The arm 18 is loosely mounted on the boss 24, and the sliding clutch member 25 is splined on the boss so that it can slide to engage either clutch teeth 27 on the arm 18 or clutch teeth 29 on a fixed member 30. The clutch 25 is controlled by the driver through lovers 29, 44 pivoted respectively at 40, 43 and forming a toggle linkage controlled by springs 50 which tend to maintain the clutch in either of its engaged positions. An arm 37 of the lever 39 is operated by a driver-controlled lever 31 through sector-and-rack gear and a sliding bar 34.
