Abstract

482,999. Rounding, roughing, and bevelling boot soles. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION. Sept. 8, 1936, No. 24457. Convention date, Sept. 9, 1935. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for operating upon soles comprises a jack mounted both for bodily movement of translation and for rotary movement, the jack including sole-engaging means against which a sole may be clamped by a rotatable clamping member, a sliding support for the clamping member and means carried by the support to rotate the clamping member to maintain it in register with the soleengaging means regardless of the position of the jack. In the machine shown, a sole is rounded, bevelled, and roughed marginally, and finally trimmed by rotary cutters 142, 144, 172, 174 controlled by a grooved pattern 272 in a similar manner to that described in Specification 440,327. The cutters are carried by vertical shafts 130,168, Fig. 5, mounted in spring-urged slides 134, 176 in a casing 136 and driven from a shaft 118 by gears 122, 140, 162. The slide 176 and shaft 168 are independently vertically adjustable by nuts 192, 196 and screws 190, 198 to alter the relative positions of the cutters 174, 172. The slide 134 is also adjustable. The casing 136 rockable about the shaft 118 is supported by an arm 92, Fig. 1, rockable about a vertical sleeve 48 which is urged by a spring 222, acting through linkage 226, 234, 236, 238 to hold the cutters up to a sole blank 240 clamped on the pattern. The shaft 118 is driven continuously from a motor 24 by a pulley 28, shaft 30, Fig. 9, skew gears 38, 40, shaft 42, skew gears 84, 86, Fig. 1, shaft 88 and other gears. The pattern 272 is supported by a jack having an internal elliptical rack as in Specification 440,327 driven by a gear on a vertical shaft which is driven from a pulley 242, Fig. 4, integral with the pulley 28 through a clutch device 250 and gears including a bevel gear 262. A clamp cross-head 312 carrying forepart and heel clamping posts 318, 320 is itself carried by a C - shaped frame 286, 287 and is rotated from the jack table 276 by gears 278, 280, 282, shaft 284, gears 288, 290, 294 and shaft 296. The posts 318, 320 are adjustable on the head 312 lengthwise of the sole blank by a right - and - left - hand screw operated by a knob 338 and have two angular positions in which they are held by spring-plungers for right- and left-hand soles. The clamp is raised by depressing a treadle 350 which operates through a rod 384, a double hooked member 382, Fig. 12, co-operating with pins 378, 380, a link 368, a rod 366 provided with an elongated plate 364 to engage over a hook 362 on a member 356, Fig. 1, a rod 354, and a two-armed lever 304, 300 pivotally connected to the shaft 296 which is slidably keyed to the gear 294. The member 382 is controlled by a hand knob 390 to co-operate with either pin 378 or 380 to give a small or large movement to the clamp for changing the work 240 or the pattern 272 respectively. The C-frame 286, 287 slides with the jack, but is held against rotation by a circular plate 592 on an arm 590 engaging a track formed by gibs 594. A control unit for the machine comprises a shaft 400, Fig. 11, on which is oscillated by a reciprocating rack 80, a pinion 396 and disc 398. The rack is reciprocated from the shaft 42, Fig. 9, by skew gears 40, 52, shaft 54, skew gears 60, 62, shaft 64, pinion 66, internal gear 68, eccentric 70, eccentric strap 74 and connecting rod 76. The disc 398 carries a spring-pressed pawl 408, Fig. 16, adapted to co-operate with a tooth 414 on a disc 412 also slidable on the shaft 400 and rotatable with the shaft by tongues 418 on a disc 420 secured to the shaft engaging notches 416. The disc 412 is raised and lowered to engage the one-way clutch device 408, 414 by a forked lever 428 engaging a groove 424 ; the lever 428 is moved against its spring 433, Figs. 10 and 11 by sliding to the right a rod 438, carrying springs 440, 442 engaging with a lever arm 432. The rod is pivoted to a lever 450 which controls the clutch 250 whereby only one clutch is engaged at any time. To operate the machine, a knob 488 is pushed in to actuate a bar 494 pulled to the left by a spring 496. A shoulder 498 on the bar 494 engages a lever 502 and rocks it when a recess 484 in the disc 398 is aligned with a roll 482 on a lever arm 480 of a rock-shaft 472 ; the latter carries also an arm 486 which engages a roll on the lever 502, and an arm 470 which engages the tail 468 of a spring-pressed pawl 464 to disengage it from a notch 462 in the disc 420 to free the shaft 400. A strap attached at one end to the cutter casing 136 thus unwinds against a light spring, from a drum on the upper end of the shaft 400 to allow first the cutters 142, 144 and subsequently the cutters 172, 174 to engage the work under the action of the spring 222. Movement of the lever 502 disengages a pawl 532 from a spring-pressed dog 528 which swings into a position to be engaged by a cam 454 adjustably secured to the disc 420 whereby a lever 506 is swung about its pivot 508 to disengage a shoulder 548 from a block 550 to free the clutch lever 450. At a later stage a projection 437 on the disc 398 disengages a pawl 434 from the lever 428 to disengage the clutch 408, 414 and engage the clutch 250 to start the jack. Movement of the jack disengages a block 596 thereon from an arm 598, thereby allowing an arm 510 carrying the lever 506 to swing against a stop 518 and the shoulder 548 to engage the block 550. The parts are automatically returned to their original positions and the machine stopped by the block 596 re-engaging the arm 598. The machine may be operated manually by a hand-crank engaged with a squared end 82 of the shaft 54.
