482,687. Leather substitutes. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP KONINKLIJKE PHARMACEUTISCHE FABRIEKEN VOORHEEN BROCADES - STHEEMAN & PHARMACIA. Feb. 25, 1937, No. 5730. Convention date, Feb. 29, 1936. [Classes 76 and 96] A spongy product resembling leather is obtained by preparing a suspension of swollen fibres of animal sinews, hide, or detanned leather in which a gas is diffused, allowing a shrinking agent to act and finally removing water and gas from the mass and tanning it. A swollen mixture of fibres e.g. of sinews and hides may be prepared in a homogenizing machine, gas being diffused in the mixture by any suitable method e.g. by adding a carbonate, if an acid swelling agent has been employed, or by " emulsifying " the mixture with air. If an acid swelling agent is used the shrinking may be effected by adding a neutralizing alkali, preferably in the gaseous or vaporous state e.g. ammonia or an amine. The process may be carried out in part while the mass is transported on a conveyer, e.g. a gas acting as shrinking agent may act on the material supported on a perforated belt, the extrusion of water being assisted by suction boxes. After shrinking, excess of diffused gas and water is removed, e.g. by a vacuum apparatus or press and by heating, the product being finally tanned in usual manner. Textile fibres may be mixed with the suspension of animal fibres. Specification 422,990 is referred to.
