Abstract

482,204. Protective layers for photographic materials. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Sept. 24, 1936, No. 25957. Convention date, Nov. 2, 1935. [Class 98 (ii)] A protective coating of a synthetic resin comprising a polymer of a carboxylic acid, or a mixed polymer of two or more carboxylic acids, or of one or more carboxylic acids with one or more vinyl compounds containing no carboxyl group and capable of polymerization, is applied to a light-sensitive or exposed photographic layer, e.g. a kinematograph film. Suitable resins are polyacrylic, polyrnaleic, polymethylene malonic, and polyacetylene dicarboxylic acids, and the mixed polymers of these acids with styrene, vinyl chloride, or butadiene. The resins may be mixed with other binding agents, e.g. gelatin which may contain a hardening agent such as alum or formalin. In examples, the protecting layers consist of (1) gelatin, sodium polyacrylate, chrome alum, and formalin ; (2) gelatin, the mixed polymer of maleic acid anhydride and vinyl chloride, chrome alum and formalin ; and (3) gelatin, sodium polymethylene malone, chrome alum, and formalin.
