481,928. Making crank - shafts. MEYER, G.. GOLDSCHMIDT, J., and STERN, H. Aug. 13, 1937, No. 22287. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1936. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Moulding processes. -A hollow, cast, crank-shaft has celllike spaces d, d<1>, d2 with rounded corners e to resist torsion and bending. The hollow space in the crank web a may be subdivided by partitions g into two similar spaces d<1>, Fig. 5, or six spaces d<1>, d4, Fig. 3. A minimum number of dissimilar cores is used in all cases. The core holes f may be used for introducing hardening agents and may be finally closed by screw plugs. In a modification the spaces d, Fig. 4, in the journals and crank-pins c extend to the farther wall of the crank a. Crank webs, too small to be cast hollow, have trough-shaped recesses separated by ribs arranged like a grid. These recesses may be covered in if desired. Specification 437,998 is referred to.
