Abstract

481,615. Cycle brakes. BANE, J. Sept. 29, 1936, No. 26357. [Class 136 (i)] In a bicycle brake of the kind comprising pivoted block-carrying levers controlled by flexible transmission mechanism and a takeoff spring, the lever arms carry lugs having aligned eyes formed therein, serving respectively for the attachment of the end of the wire or cord and as an abutment for the outer tubular member or casing of the transmission mechanism. The brake levers a, b are pivoted on studs c carried by a plate d; which is bolted at e to the cycle fork, either fixedly, or pivotally to effect equalization of the braking pressure of the blocks f. The overlapping upper ends of the levers a, b are horizontal, and are provided with lugs or bosses k formed with eyes or screw-threaded holes for the reception of aligned split nipples l, l<1>, through which passes the wire m of a Bowden transmission o adapted to draw the upper ends of the levers together, against the action of a tension spring v, to apply the brake. In a modification, the pivots c are at the lower ends of the levers, the spring v is between the upper ends, and the brake blocks f and the eyed lugs kare at intermediate positions. The brake may be mounted on the rear of the front fork without interfering with the steering movements of the latter, and if desired an additional brake may be mounted on the front of the fork, a single operating wire or cord passing through both eyes of each brake and passing from one brake to the other through a bent guide tube or around a pulley or curved guide.
