Abstract

481,584. Carbonizing - apparatus. JONES, F. W. SALISBURY-, and NISBET, R. June 6, 1936, No. 33996/35. [Class 55 (i)J Coal or the like is distilled at about 650‹ C. by being fed into containers which move by gravity through an externally heated retort under control of a lowering device which comprises supports moving along the path of the containers. The containers, after being charged, are passed through a gas-tight closure into the retort and removed through a similar closure for discharging purposes. The retort 3 is constructed of open-ended elements of oblong crosssection, for example 2 ft. by 6 in., and is supported by a footstep 4 and frame 1, and has a gas offtake 7, and an inlet 6 carrying the casing of an inlet valve 37. The containers 8 are charged from a hopper 54, a measuring hopper 55, and a hinged shoot 56, and enter a pocket 42 in the valve 37, rotation of which delivers the container into the retort inlet 6. A similar valve at the bottom of the retort delivers the container to an outlet opening 41. Each container 8 rests on the one below and is provided with a shoe 13 which rests on the upper ends of fittings 11 of the lower container, the containers resting against rubbing strips of the retort sides by rubbing strips 14. The containers are supported by arms 27 of endless chains 26 passing over sprocket wheels 25 in a casing 17, skid bars 31 supporting the chains against the pressure of the arms. The supporting device co-operates with an elevating endless chain conveyer 47 which runs over sprocket wheels 46, 50 and has arms 48 similar to the arms 27 which engage the containers by their trunnions 15. The containers are discharged by being inverted over a discharging hopper 49. The elevator chains 47 are driven at a higher speed than the chains 26 and carry the empty conveyers upwards, in a path excluded from the heat of the retort flues, to guides 45 leading to the charging opening 40.
