Abstract

481,569. Hydraulic shock absorbers. PRATT, J. H., MANLEY, G. E., and GIRLING, A. H. G. Sept. 14, 1936, No. 24953. [Class 108 (iii)] In a hydraulic shock-absorber any increase in the volume of liquid due to temperature changes is compensated for by a variation in volume of a flexible or resilient member which is disposed inside the shock-absorber casing and is subject both to atmospheric pressure and to the pressure of the liquid. In the shock-absorber shown, pistons 3a, 3b connected together and held in engagement with the ball-end 10 of the operating crank 11 by a bent wire spring 9, are adapted during operation to force liquid from either cylinder 1a, 1b through a byepassage 34 or 35 in the shock-absorber casing and into the interior of a tube 24a or 24b through a port 26 on the wall thereof, thus moving a ball-valve 21 against the action of a spring 28 until the corresponding port 26 in the other tube 24b or' 24a is uncovered by the ball when the liquid flows out through the port and byepassage 35 or 34 to the other cylinder. On the return movement of either piston towards the centre of the. shock-absorber liquid passes from the central reservoir space 2 through a non-return valve 8 on the piston to the other side of the piston. Any expansion of the liquid due to increase in temperature causes compression of a rubber bag 15 the open end of which is fixed in the hollow operating shaft 12 by means of a metal thimble 16 pressed into the outer end of the shaft and apertured to permit communication between the bag and the atmosphere.
