Abstract
Tubular products particularly adapted for use as sausage casings are obtained by extruding from annular nozzles swollen and shredded animal fibrous materials such as hides or sinews and then treating with hardening liquids containing formaldehyde and other iodine-consuming substances which have been adjusted to a formaldehyde content of 0,025 to 0,2 gms. per 100 ccs., to an iodine value of 3,5 to 8,5 and a pH value of 2,5 to 3. The hardening liquid is preferably obtained by distillation of wood or its waste products, e.g. sawdust, the crude distillate, if necessary after redistillation, being adjusted by addition of water to a formaldehyde content of, for example, 0,12 gr. per 100 ccs. If the iodine value of the product is less than 3,5 crude distillate is added until this value is exceeded, or a wood distillate may be added, the iodine value of which is high in relation to the formaldehyde content. The distillate is next adjusted to a pH value of 2,5 to 3 by adding formic or acetic acid if it is too alkaline and ammonia if it is too acid. Alternatively, the hardening liquid may be prepared by combining compounds such as coniferyl alcohol, eugenol, acetaldehyde, pyrocatechol, pyrogallol and hydroquinone with formaldehyde and formic or acetic acid to give the desired form-aldehyde content, iodine value and pH value. The product as it comes from the extrusion nozzle may be conveyed as a continuous band through drying channels where it is treated with hot air, air being also preferably blown into the interior of the tube to inflate it. The hardening liquid is painted or sprayed on the inflated tube which is then dried. The hardening treatment and drying may be repeated. The product is washed with water and again dried. The treatment of the artificial tubular products produced according to Specifications 429,040 and 433,245 is described.
