Abstract

480,296. Vehicle pneumatic suspensions. SOC. D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S. I. A. M. June 26, 1937, Nos. 17889 and 17890. Convention dates, Oct. 8, 1936 and April 21, 1937. [Class 108 (ii)] In pneumatic suspensions for vehicles the pneumatic chambers are connected with auxiliary chambers by means which prevent, during the travel of the vehicle, the variation of pressures in the auxiliary chambers from affecting the main pneumatic chambers, the pressures in the auxiliary chambers being variable under the operation of the driver. As shown in Fig. 2 the pneumatic suspensions comprising cylinders 7 and pistons 9 attached to the axle 11 are in communication with control means through pipes 6 having throttling means 8 whereby air circulation between the cylinders 7 and the control chambers is restricted during oscillations of the axle while permitting equalization of pressure under static conditions. The control means comprise air chambers 1 having pistons 2 controllable by the driver through screw hand wheels 3. Fig. 4 shows another arrangement wherein the cylinders 7 are placed in communication with one air chamber 1 the pressure of which is controlled by an accumulator 17, 19, a valve 20 being employed to allow the pressure of the accumulator to have access to the air chamber 1 and a pump 21 in parallel to pump oil out of the chamber 1 into the accumulator to decrease pressure. Indicating means are provided on the instrument board whereby the driver may determine the correct pressure and also the level of the body with respect to the axle.
