Abstract

Wetting, emulsifying, and detergent agents are manufactured by treating saturated alcohols having at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule with a solid reagent prepared by reacting chlorsulphonic acid with a chloride or sulphate of ammonium or of a metal which forms a water soluble salt with the resulting alcohol sulphuric ester. Both the formation of the solid reagent and the esterification of the alcohols may be effected in a ball mill or other mixing vessel provided with means for removal of hydrochloric acid and for cooling. The product, if in acid condition is neutralized and may be purified to free it both from unesterified alcohols and from inorganic salts. In examples, (1) sodium chloride or sulphate is reacted with chlorsulphonic acid and the product after being ground to powder reacted with alcohols obtained by hydrogenation of coconut oil or tallow; neutralization is effected with sodium carbonate; (2) the ester obtained by treating coconut oil alcohols with the chlorsulphonic acid-sodium chloride reaction product is freed from organic impurities by means of petroleum ether and is crystallized from ethyl alcohol. The use of the chlorides or sulphates of potassium, magnesium, cobalt, manganese, and nickel is mentioned. Specification 479,553 is referred to.ALSO:Emulsifying-agents are manufactured by treating saturated alcohols having at least eight carbon atoms in the molecule with solid reagents, which are probably metal chlorsulphonates prepared by reacting chlorsulphonic acid with a chloride or sulphate of ammonium or of a metal which forms a water soluble salt with the resulting alcohol sulphuric ester. In examples, (1) sodium chloride or sulphate is reacted with chlorsulphonic acid and the product after being ground to powder reacted with alcohols obtained by the hydrogenation of coconut oil or tallow; neutralization is effected with sodium carbonate; (2) the ester obtained by treating coconut oil alcohols with the chlorsulphonic acid-sodium chloride reaction product is freed from organic impurities by means of petroleum ether and is crystallized from ethyl alcohol.
