478,510. Making wheels. KELSEYHAYES WHEEL CO. July 16,1936, No. 19771. Convention date, July 22, 1935. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Punches ; shearing ; stamping.-A method of forming pressed sheet metal spoked wheels, comprises bending strip stock into tubular form, contracting one edge portion to form a cup-shaped blank, expanding the other edge portion, and fashioning the expanded portion to produce radial spokes. A length is severed from a sheet metal strip, and is bent to cylindrical form, and its abutting edges are welded. The blank so formed is pressed between dies 17, 18, Fig. 12, to form a flange 19, the thickness of the metal being increased towards the flange. The cupped form is flared in a further pair of dies, the flared portion 22 then being flattened by dies 24, 25, Fig. 14. Dies 27, 27<1>, 28, Fig. 15, shear the blank to produce spoke members 30, Fig. 22, and projections 29, after which the blank is pressed and trued between further dies. The spokes are formed from the members 30, and a continuous peripheral flange is formed so that the ends of the spokes are closed, by dies 32, 33, Fig. 17. An inner flange 35 is also formed, and recesses 34 are produced which are pierced and-swaged to form bolt-holes by dies 36, 37, Fig. 18. Rivet holes are formed in the inner flange between a further pair of punch-carrying dies. The ends of the spokes 8, Fig. 1, are formed with depressions 11 engaging similar formations in the rim 10, and the contacting surfaces are welded. Hub cap spring clips are riveted to the flange 2 between the bolt-holes 6. Specifications 478,508 and 478,509 are referred to.
