[Class 56] A method of making threads of glass or other ductile material consists in drawing the glass through a tapering aperture in a draw plate 2, the inner surface of the aperture being smooth and having a shape which corresponds to the shape formed naturally by the drawn mass. The draw plate is fitted to a tubular furnace 1 the wall of which is heated by an electric heating-coil 4 or other suitable means. Preferably the tube 1 is extended downwards by a sleeve 1<1> which is also heated to anneal the glass thread as it is drawn from the aperture. The thread is wound on a drum 8 rotated by a motor 13, and an electric potential difference may be maintained between the drum and points 9 close to the thread in order to attract the thread to the drum. This device may be used to detect breakage in the thread by observing any variation in the potential difference. The motor 13 and the drum are mounted on a slide 14 which is moved by any suitable means in order to wind the thread evenly on the drum. A second motor 13<1> with an empty drum can also be mounted on the slide 14 to enable a filled drum to be replaced without stopping the drawing. The drawing plate may contain a number of apertures, and the furnace may be rotated about its vertical axis in order to twist the threads together. The thread also may be drawn into the form of an endless belt passing over two rollers. The threads in the drawn mass may be sprayed with a solution of rubber, and the spraying may be carried out in an atmosphere of inert gas to prevent the solvent from being ignited by the hot glass thread.
