Abstract
477,113. Switches partly electromagnetic ; spark - preventing in switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and STOPFORD, C. W. Nov. 17, 1936, No. 31442. [Class 38 (v)] A switch of the type in which, when contact is made, the moving contact is held against the fixed by a force which is opposed to, but overcomes, an elastic force tending to separate the contacts, and in which the contacts are separated by the application of a force in the direction of the elastic force, so that the resultant of this and the elastic force overcomes the first-named force, is provided with a conducting back-stop which is connected to the fixed contact through a condenser, which may be shunted to a resistance, but is not otherwise connected to the contacts. The first-named force may be magnetic, and the last-named may be exerted by a thermo-sensitive member, the back-stop serving to limit the separation of the contacts so that arcs are not unduly lengthened and yet, when once extinguished, cannot re-form. In a D.C. switch suitable for breaking 10 amps. at 240 volts, the contacts 1, 2 are silver plugs each six millimetres long and 2À5 in diameter, the movable 2 being mounted on a leaf-spring 3 which can separate it to a distance of 0À2 mm. in 0À01 seconds, as determined by back-stop 4, so reducing the length and duration of the are. The condenser 5 is of one microfarad capacity, and the resistance 6 is about a megohm. Specification 305,077, [Class 38 (v)], is referred to.
