Abstract

476,278. Milling-machines. GRAVES, B. P. March 4, 1937, No. 6425. [Class 83 (iii)] A milling or like machine. provided with a rigid, hollow upright standard, has a fixed overhang 21, Fig. 1, integral with and extending outwardly from the upper portion of the standard, a rotatable spindle, and a number of bearings for the spindle, one of these being located in the overhanging portion supporting the spindle close to its forward extremity. Three bearings 27, 28, 29, Fig. 4, are provided for the spindle, the bearing 27 being located in the overhang ; oil conduits 40 are provided to return the oil, used in lubricating the spindle bearings, to the interior of the casing. The overhanging support enables short arbors to be utilized, the work table passing underneath the overhang, and gives increased support to the spindle and the overarms 23 ; it also facilitates the use of a milling-attachment which may be bolted to the forward face 30 of the overhang by means of bolt holes 37 provided in lugs 36, Fig. 3.
