Abstract

474,911. Photo-mechanical printing- surfaces. KODAK, Ltd. May 9, 1936, No. 13164. Convention date, May 21, 1935. Drawings to Specification. [Class 98 (ii)] A sensitive element for preparing reliefprinting plates comprises a support bearing one or more sensitive layers, one layer, or a stratum of a single layer where only one is used, having formed therein a latent screen image of dots of uniform size and density but each graded in density from a maximum at the centre to a minimum at the periphery. A continuous tone image is subsequently recorded in another layer or stratum. The dot image may be recorded in the upper stratum of a single layer, the continuous-tone image being printed through the support, which may be coloured to limit the penetration of the light. Alternatively the emulsion may be coloured with a dye which is removed in the processing. In place of a single layer, two superimposed layers or two layers arranged on opposite sides of the support may be used. The emulsion layers may be sensitized to different regions of the spectrum, e.g. one to green and the other to red or infra-red, printing being effected with appropriate lights. In one example, a yellow dyed silver halide emulsion of low gamma coated on a support of cellulose nitrate is exposed through the support to a 65-line screen spaced from the emulsion. The emulsion side is then exposed in a contact printing frame to a negative of the subject. The resulting film is developed in a solution of metol, hydroquinone, sodium sulphite, sodium carbonate and potassium bromide and the positive formed is then printed by contact through the support onto a film having an emulsion of high gamma and the resulting negative developed with a solution of trioxymethylene, hydroquinone, sodium sulphite, sodium metabisulphite, boric acid, and potassium bromide. The material may also be exposed in a camera.
