Abstract
474,540. Sawing. GAUNT, J. G. (Vogt Processes, Inc.) Aug. 27, 1936, No. 23566. [Class 145 (ii)] [Also in Group V] A device for cutting-off lengths of continually advancing material such as a bar of wrapped ice-cream comprises a double-edged blade movable transversely through the material while travelling therewith, and means for causing the opposite edges of the blade to cut the material alternately. As shown, a bar 11, Fig. 3, of wrapped ice cream is fed through tubular guides by grooved rollers 28 to a tubular guide 79 that is secured to a slide carrying a two-edged saw 119 and is reciprocated by rack-and-pinion mechanism 96, 97 to move at the same speed as that of the material during its forward movement. The saw 119 is adapted to be oscillated about a shaft 128 to move, transversely through the material by an intermittently-rotated cam mounted on a shaft 105 and engaging a roller 120, Fig. 12, on a forked member 125 slidable on a rod 123. The fork engages a pin 126 on an extension 127 of a sleeve 153 rotatable about the shaft 128. The saw is mounted on a slide 136 that is vibrated by an eccentric 133 on the rotating shaft 128. In use, the saw, on one forward movement, cuts through the material as it is oscillated in one direction about the shaft 128. The cutter supporting means including the guide are then moved to the left, and on the next forward movement, the saw is swung about the shaft 128 in the opposite direction so that its other edge effects the cutting. In order to support the forward end of the bar 11 during the cutting operation, curved guide members 170, 171, Fig. 13, are carried by parallel link devices 184 from members slidable on shafts 174. During the forward movement, the members 170, 171 occupy the position shown in dotted lines. After the cutting operation, they are moved apart and allow the severed length to fall on to a conveyer in a refrigerating chamber.
