[Class 83 (iii)] A drilling-machine having a spindle housing and a rotatable and translatable spindle journalled therein, is provided with a spindle drive assembly comprising a spindle driving pulley 28, Fig. 3, and bearing means 38, 39 therefor, constructed as a unitary assembly and arranged so as to be moved laterally with respect to said housing 23 and into and out of driving relationship with said spindle. In assembling the machine, or changing the driving pulley 28 for one of a different size, the pulley assembly is moved laterally within the housing 27 and the splined end of the spindle 44 moved upwardly into engagement with the driving part 33 of the pulley assembly. The motor 17, Fig. 1, driving the spindle through a belt 22, is adjustably supported on the arm 14, which may be rotated or heightadjusted on the pillar 11. The drilling-head may also be used in an inverted position with the spindle projecting through the vertically adjustable table 12 from below. A flat coiledup spring, which may be adjusted, is connected to the feed pinion to act as a balancing device for the spindle or to return the latter when released. A graduated bar 63, Fig. 6, with an adjustable stop 65 co-operating with a fixed stop member 64 enables the depth of cut to be determined.
