Abstract
474,209. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 6, 1937, No. 9805. Convention date, April 6, 1936. Addition to 470,145. [Class 38 (ii)] Relates to polyphase transformers in which the core structure is arranged so that 5th and 7th harmonic components of magnetomotive force cancel out as described in the parent Specification, and in which a damping winding 7 for 3rd harmonic flux is provided on the yokes excited by an auxiliary winding 8 on the limbs, and consists in making the auxiliary winding in the form of flat strip 8 embedded in an insulating cylinder 15a. The winding may be laid in grooves cut in the cylinder or on a plain cylinder with strips of insulation wound to fill the spaces between the turns. A further insulating cylinder 15b is passed over the winding to form a foundation for the main windings 4a, 4b the mean diameters of which are but slightly increased by the presence of the auxiliary windings. Shortcircuit currents due to earth faults in the auxiliary windings are limited by arranging the winding near the middle of the limb so as to have maximum dispersion and by providing fuses 9 in the connections to the damping winding.
