Abstract

474,185. Gas-blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1936, No. 33328. Convention date, Dec. 5, 1935. [Class 38 (v)] Magnetic blow-outs.-In a switch in which arc-extinction is effected by gas evolved by the influence of the arc on insulating walls disposed adjacent-its path, in order to equalize the wear produced on the contacts and walls by the arc, one or more coils are provided on the walls for producing a radial field for causing the arc to wander. A coil or coils 8 are connected between the fixed contact 2 and an arcing ring 3, and are arranged on the walls of a gas-evolving, insulating body 6 which, with the insulating pin 7, forms the arcing space 4 receiving the tubular movable contact 1. In order to concentrate the flux 11, shortcircuited windings 12, 13 are provided, and in some circumstances the ring 3 may serve as such a winding. The arc-root on contact 1 may be additionally influenced magnetically by milling out grooves 14 of spiral shape, Fig. 2, whereby the individual contact-sections act as coils. Where several coils are employed the connection of the coils is such that the fields produced by successive coils are differently oriented, the arc being thus compelled to pass successively through differently-oriented fields and thus rapidly moved.
