Abstract

473,335. Fusible cut-outs. BELLING & LEE, Ltd., and STRAFFORD, F. R. W. April 7, 1936, No. 10201. [Class 38 (i)] In order to delay fusing on momentary overloads, the fuse element, which may be of nickel or nickel alloy, is coated with magnesium to absorb the heat generated. Upon prolonged overload the magnesium is ignited, melting the wire. The magnesium may be powdered and mixed with a binding-agent. In one form it is applied in paste form and in another a suspension of magnesium in a solution of a binding-agent is sprayed on the wire. The wire may be mounted in a hermetically sealed tube containing oxygen or air. Sputtering, electrolytic deposition and painting are other methods of applying the metal to the wire, which need not be completely covered. According to the Provisional Specification aluminium may replace the magnesium.
