Abstract

472,804. Rolling metal bands. DOUBS, J. March 24, 1937, No. 8737. [Class 83 (iv)] In a process for hot rolling wide metal bands in a reversible mill, the work is first preliminarily rolled to strips of predetermined length which are stacked in a reheating furnace while the mill is converted to a finish-rolling mill, whereupon the strips are withdrawn singly, rolled to the final thickness and received on winding rollers. The blooms are heated in an oven 1 and then passed edge-on through a descaling machine 2, and then through an edge-rolling mill 3. The work then passes to a four high mill 4, driven bv a reversible motor 5 and is rolled backwards and forwards with simultaneous edge rolling which may be effected by mills arranged in front of and behind the four high mill. The strips which are then about 10 mm. thick and 15-20 metres long, are then pickled if necessary and transferred along a conveyer 7 to an oven 9. A new set of finish rolls are now placed in the mill 4, and the strips removed singly from the oven and passed through the finish mill to a winding device 10. The mill is then reversed and the work re-rolled and wound on a second winding device 10a rotating in the same direction as the winder 10. Both winding devices are heat insulated and have pivoted inlet gates and before the fourth pass the gate of the winder 10a is lowered and the band is delivered to a cold winding device 11 or in cut into strips by shears 12. When the last strip has been removed from the furnace 9, cycle is recommenced on another batch of blooms from the oven 1.
