Abstract

471,479. Coating pipes. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Standard Oil Co. of California) Feb. 29, 1936, No. 6198. [Class 99 (ii)] A pipe 10 is coated with a thick seamless layer 20 of bituminous &c. plastic material by applying the latter to a portion of the width of a tensioned flexible tape 19 which is led through a shoot 11, fed with plastic material from an overhead hopper, and is wrapped around the helically-advancing pipe with its leading edge, which is free of plastic material, overlapping the trailing edge of the previous convolution, the base 14 of the shoot being spaced from the pipe a distance A equal to the desired thickness of plastic by a shoe 12. The shoot is provided as shown with a guide plate 16 which is stepped at 17 to leave a space 18 into which the leading edge of the tape is received and so kept free of plastic and is also so shaped at its inner edge 24 as to prevent the plastic in the shoot from contacting with the tape already wrapped. When the plastic has set the tape may be removed and a coating of lime wash applied. Specifications 354,803 and 354,844, [both in Group V], are referred to.
