Abstract

471,346. Moulding refactory oxides. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. Sept. 26, 1936, No. 26190. Convention date, Sept. 30, 1935. [Classes 22 and 87 (ii)] Shaped articles of refractory oxides are made by placing pulverulent oxides in a mould, heating to a temperature below the melting point of the oxide while subjecting it to pressure and cooling. The oxide may be heated until it softens and then quickly cooled to a temperature below its melting point. The material may be an oxide of aluminium, magnesium, silicon, zirconium, titanium, beryllium, thorium, cerium or chromium or it may be mullite. The temperature may be just below 1800‹ C. or higher according to the melting point. The pressure may be from 50 to 10,000 lb. per sq. in. The temperature is adjusted so that there is little or no reaction between the mould, which may be of graphite, and the material. The article may be made in apparatus comprising a metal shell 10 having metal end walls 12 insulated therefrom by rings 14. The shell 10 may be cooled by water from a pipe 15. Heating is effected by an electrical resistance in the form of a graphite tube 20 supported in sleeves 21 and having water-cooled terminals 23 attached. The tube 20 is surrounded by pulverulent lamp black fed through a tube 16. The mould comprises a sleeve 31 carrying slidable end rings 33 and a core 32. Pressure is applied by plungers 35, 36, the plunger 35 bearing against an adjusting screw 37, while the plunger 36 is urged inwards by a weight 51 acting through a lever arm 53, which also carries a pointer 58 for indicating the movement. The moulded mass may be slowly cooled through an annealing zone and removed from the mould. The article may be cut into smaller pieces which may be shaped by abrasion. The article is formed with a substantially continuous phase of crystalline material having a conchoidal fracture. Tubes, nozzles, dies, bearings, spark plugs or other articles may be moulded. Specifications 439,529; and 449,315, [Group III], are referred to.
