Abstract
470,770. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FRANCIS, V. J., and RYDE, J. W. Feb. 20, 1936, Nos. 5144/36, 5889/36, 5892/36, and 946/37. [Class 39 (i)] In a high pressure mercuryvapour lamp in which the light is not required to be projected in some directions and in which the discharge column is unstable inso far as voltage, length of discharge path, pressure, &c. go, the column is retained in place by forcing it by convection-currents, a magnetic field &c. against a partition of refractory material, or a portion of the wall of the lamp or internal partition that is specially cooled. The refractory partition may be a V-shaped plate of sintered thoria and the column be driven into the apex of the V. Fig. 2 shows an internal partition 5 having a narrowed portion 6 into which the column is driven, cooling fluid passing through the space 7 above the partition. The first Provisional Specification shows other shapes of partition suitable for use in this way. Fig. 3 shows an envelope to the upper part of which is applied a metal member 8 having a water passage 9, or the cooling may be effected by air-cooled fins. The second Provisional Specification shows a refractory partition with tungsten blades projecting therefrom, but the Complete Specification states that this has been found to be unsatisfactory.
