Abstract
469,828. Vehicle lifeguards. BELLIS, T., and ABRAMS, G. Feb. 5, 1936, No. 3398. [Class 103 (ii)] In a motor-vehicle lifeguard which extends across the front of the vehicle and is slidably mounted in side channel members 5 of a fixed guide-frame 6, the guard proper 2, 3 is held in the raised position by means of a spring- controlled catch or catches 16 engaging the underside of the guard and adapted to be released by means of a pedal or manual control operable by the driver to permit the guard to drop under gravity or spring-pressure into a lower operative position just clear of the road surface, the side channel members providing a rigid fore-and-aft support for the guard when in the lower position. As shown, the frame 6 is fixed to the chassis by forked brackets 9, the stems 10 of which are bolted to the chassis members 12 and the ends of the limbs 13, 14 connected to upper and lower cross-members 6, 7 of the guide-frame. The spring-catches 16 secured to the lower fork limbs 14 are adapted to be released by depression of a pedal 17 acting through a double-armed lever 19, rod or cable 21, pulley 22, and cable 23 connected to the catches.
