Abstract

469,827. Endless-chain conveyers. ROBINSON, Ltd., E. S. & A., ROBINSON, H. G., and COOPER, A. B. Feb. 4, 1936, No. 3368. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XVII] The rectangular end-flaps of a carton are closed by folding in first one of the wide flaps, then the pair of narrow flaps and finally the other wide flap, adhesive being applied between the flaps. After closure the cartons are delivered in stacked formation to a conveyer which grips the ends to ensure setting of the adhesive. The apparatus is adjustable for different sizes of carton. A platform 37 is moved horizontally by a crank 60 and the carton carried thereby is delivered to a pair of gripping plates 38. As the platform 37 returns, an ejector 44 rises and lifts the suspended carton into the space between the conveyer bands 15. As these operations are repeated, a stack of cartons is formed between the bands 15, and when a predetermined number of cartons have been stacked, the conveyer advances a step, and a fresh stack is started. The conveyer is advanced intermittently through a clutch 51, 52 under the control of a selector disc 54, which is driven slowly from the shaft 66 and is provided with one or more notches as desired to allow a member 53 to be retracted and the clutch 51, 52 to be engaged. The distance between the conveyer bands 15 is adjusted to the length of the cartons by a wheel 18 on the end of a screw-threaded shaft 19.
