Abstract
469,171. Motor vehicles. NORTH, O. D., HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. Oct. 8, 1936, No. 28620/35. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a motor vehicle, the driving assembly comprises a preferably horizontally - opposedcylinder engine 1, clutch casing 8, gearbox 9 and live axle housing 10 in rigid T-formation, the engine, at the end remote from the axle, is pivoted to a transverse frame member 6, the ends of the axle housing are connected to the vehicle frame by rubber buffers 15, preferably as described in Specification 456,752, [Group XXXII], and the frame is braced by diagonal bars 23 extending over substantially the full length and breadth of the driving assembly. The variable speed gear may be of the form described in Specification 423,952, [Group XXIV]. The driving assembly may extend to the rear of the axle, Figs. 1 and 2, or forwardly thereof, Fig. 5, the engine being adapted for use either way by being provided on opposite sides with a detachable sump 4 and a coverplate which are interchangeable. The engine may be supported by passing the tubular cross frame member 6 through a rubber &c. lined opening 5 in a lug on the crank case, the ends of the member 6 being secured in the' channelled side frame members 7. The rubber buffers 15 are engaged by arms 16 secured to the side frame members by rivets or bolts which also secure the flanged ends of a tubular cross member 17. The axle housing is connected to the frame by a transverse link to preserve alignment. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bracing bars 23 extend from the side frame members 7 to the point of pivotal support 5 on the cross frame members 6. When the engine, together with the cross frame member 6, is in front of the axle, the arms 16 and cross member 17 are placed at the rear, the diagonal bars 23 then being connected to the centre of the member 17. The T-formation of .the driving assembly may be stiffened by stays 18. With a water-cooled engine, the radiator 21 may be mounted on the frame or, as shown, be carried by the conductor pipes 22 on the engine. In Fig. 1, the radiator is cooled by a fan 20 and enclosed in a body skirt 19 with louvres 19a. In Fig. 5, the fan 20 and a dynamo 24 are carried in a bracket attached to a cross frame member 7a, the driving shaft 26 passing through an opening in the radiator. The front axle of the vehicle is also shown supported by rubber buffers 27, similar to the buffers 15, radius rods 28, 31 extending from the ends of the axle and the supporting brackets for the rubber buffers, respectively, to a pivotal or universal joint connection 30 on a flat or channelled cross frame member 29, the main plane of the member 29 being inclined so as to be substantially normal to the mean plane of the pairs of radius rods. Diagonal frame bracing bars 23a are also provided. Specification 457,792 also is referred to.
