Abstract
467,528. Vehicle lifeguards. ROTH, A. A. April 8, 1936, No. 10319. Convention date, May 24, 1935. [Class 103 (ii)] - A motor-vehicle lifeguard comprises a tray 1 which normally extends horizontally in front of the vehicle and is carried by supports 6, 7, each having projecting parts engaging respectively a rear horizontal slot 15 and a front cam slot 20 in a main supporting bracket 16 so that, on the tray meeting a yieldable obstruction, it is guided automatically into a lower inclined position against the action of a spring 80 whereas, on meeting a fixed obstruction, it is moved upwardly slightly and acts in this position as a bumper. As shown, the tray 1 consists of a tube 2 bent into the form of a closed loop reinforced by rods 3, and is secured by straps 8 to the supports 6, 7 which are formed with lugs 12 connected by a rod 10 and with rearwardly-extending parts carrying studs 14, the ends of the rods 10 and the studs 14 engaging the slots 15, 20 respectively. When the tray moves to its lower operative position, the rod 10 is transferred backwardly and downwardly from pockets 27 in the slots 20 by means of bifurcated guides 21 pivotally mounted on the brackets 16. Rattle of the rod 10 is prevented by a spring-pressed plate 34. To protect the radiator and mudguards an upper bow-shaped guard 47 is secured to the brackets 16 by means of cover-plates 40 formed with halfcollars 49<1> co-operating with half-collars 49 formed at the upper ends of the brackets. To enable the distance travelled by the vehicle after lowering of the guard to be ascertained, a spring-pulled, toothed member 55 for marking the surface of the road is pivotally mounted on one of the brackets 16. In a modified construction, the tray 1 may be folded into an inoperative vertical position, the studs 14 moving out of the slots 15.
