Abstract
<PICT:0467502/III/1> In high-frequency apparatus for killing bacteria in materials, two or more pairs of electrodes, each pair connected to a separate frequency-determining circuit, are disposed about the body, and means is provided for continuously changing the phase relation between the pairs of electrodes. In one form of the invention, the frequency-determining circuits are connected to spark-gaps themselves connected in parallel through high-frequency chokes and energized from an oscillation circuit connected to the secondary of a mains transformer, the irregularity of the spark discharges producing the desired phase relation change. In another form, two back-coupled thermionic valve oscillating circuits are connected in parallel to the secondary of a mains transformer and are coupled with the tuned electrode circuits, the oscillators being tuned to, or modulated by, different frequencies to produce the phase-relation change; the anode lead of one oscillator embodies a high-frequency choke preventing interchange of energy between the oscillators. As shown, two or more valve oscillators such as 1, 2, coupled as at 5, 6 to tuned electrode circuits 7, 8, have their anodes connected in rapid succession to a source of positive potential such that only one oscillator is energized at any instant, with two oscillators the potential source may be the secondary of a mains transformer 3 to the opposite ends of which the oscillators are connected. In all modifications the electrode and supply arrangements permit concentration of treatment energy at any desired point in the body or material whilst avoiding surface effects. In addition, with the circuit shown the output circuits may be used independently, or simultaneously for low-power treatment of two independent bodies or materials, or in parallel for single high-power treatments. The Provisional Specification illustrates four pairs of electrodes connected to separate generators, the electrode being arranged side by side on opposite sides of an elongated body to effect treatment over a large area. Specification 315,367, [Class 1 (i)], is referred to.
