Abstract

<PICT:0466910/III/1> Solvent vapours are recovered from gases by absorbing them in an alkyl ester of phosphoric acid or alternatively, in phosphoric p acid esterified by at least one aliphatic alcohol radical and at least one phenol radical. For example, dibutyl phenyl phosphate, phosphoric acid esters of glycol ethers, or trimethyl, triethyl, or tripropyl phosphate may be used. If the esters used are solid at normal temperatures they may be dissolved in diethyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, triacetin, or ortho- or metatoluene ethyl sulphonamide. In the apparatus shown, fabric treated with solutions in a chamber 1 is dried by air circulation in chamber 4. The air and solvent vapour then passes through pipe 8 to a tower 12 wherein the solvent vapours are absorbed in the phosphoric ester. The ester then passes through a heat exchanger 21 to a still 23 in which the solvent is driven off. The ester then passes through exchanger 21, a cooler 26, and a reservoir 16 back to the tower 12. If a mixture of solvents is employed, a fractionating column 29 is provided to separate the vapours into two fractions which are condensed and collected in tanks 32 and 37.
