Abstract

466,733. CrÛping paper &c. ZELLSTOFFABRIK WALDHOF, and HAAS, R. May 5, 1936, Nos. 12712 and 12713. Convention dates, May 6, 1935 and Sept. 6, 1935. [Class 141] [Also in Group XVI] A process for the longitudinal crÛping of webs c of paper, metal foil or other sheet material comprises passing the web around part of the periphery of a curved roller a, Fig. 1, or of a body shaped at such part like a curved roller, and exerting pressure against the web where it passes around the roller. The pressure device which may consist of a block h, Fig. 3, or of an endless band or endless cords, causes the web to follow the narrowing surface of the roller and thus become crÛped longitudinally. The roller a may be. formed by bending a solid rubber tube or inflated rubber tube or may consist of a rubber tube drawn over a series of discs assembled on a curved axis b. Various methods are described for preventing circumferential deformation of the surface of the roller which is liable to tear the material. In one arrangement Fig. 9, projections t on internal discs u engage slots on the inner surface of the rubber covering s or pins on the discs may engage holes in the covering. Further, wires or fabrics may be inserted in the covering to prevent the deformation. Another method which may be employed is to make the covering of a number of rings secured to discs or of a number of longitudinal strips fitting in grooves in the discs, and the separate rings or strips may be arranged to overlap to prevent the material being nipped between the parts. The covering may be formed by winding on the members u a fabric which is yieldable only in the direction of its width. The outer surface of the covering S may be slotted as shown at E, Fig. 9. Either the roller a or the cords or band co-operating with it may be driven, and where driven cords are employed, the roller may be replaced by a stationary member shaped like a roller but with its upper segment removed. The web of material may be crÛped transversely before being submitted to the longitudinal crÛping, and the apparatus may be included in a machine for calendering or cutting the web. Also, a number of crÛping elements may operate on the web in succession.
