Ink-ribbon mechanism.-In a typewriter, printing-telegraph, or like machine, a supplyspool and a winding-spool for hectograph carbon-paper are mounted on the platencarriage, the carbon paper being unwound from the supply spool by the traction of the platen-roller, and the winding-spool being driven from the supply spool, the driving-means being preferably frictional. In the printing- telegraph apparatus shown in the Figure, a paper roll 5 rests on rollers 9 in yokes 8 on the platen-carriage 77, the paper web being led over guides 10, 11, around the platen 7, and beneath a knife 34. A bracket 14 secured to the yokes is provided with stub shafts 15 supporting a carbon-supply spool 17 and a spring-urged pivoted frame 24 which is provided with stub shafts 25 supporting a carbonwinding spool 33. The right-hand stub shafts 15, 25 are provided with large and small pinions 18, 27 meshing with a pinion 23 mounted on an arm 22 on the bracket 8. The carbon web passes from the supply spool to the winding-spool and around the platen. At each line-spacing operation, the carbon web is drawn off the supply spool, and the winding- spool is rotated more quickly than the supply spool, and when the carbon web becomes taut, the frame 24 is rocked to separate the pinions 27, 23, excessively tight re-winding being thereby avoided. In an alternative construction, both pairs of stub-shafts 15, 27 are mounted on ball-bearings in the bracket 14 and the righthand stub shafts are provided with pulleys which are connected by a spring belt adapted to slip when the carbon web becomes taut. The pulley associated with the shaft 25 may be provided with a slipping clutch.
