Abstract

466,633. Vehicle hoods. MALTBY'S MOTOR WORKS & GARAGE, Ltd., and REDFERN, F. H. Aug. 28, 1935,No. 24081. [Class 108 (i)] In a vehicle hood of the type employing rear pillars pivoted to the vehicle and interconnected to cant rails by linkage a single acting hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder and ram or piston connected to the rear pillars or each of them, is employed to erect or collapse the hood the reverse operation being performed manually. As shown the hood, of known type, comprises a rear pillar 1 a two-section cant rail 5, 7 pivoted thereto at 6 and provided with a rear extension to which is pivoted a two-part rear stay 20 pivoted to the underframe bracket 3 to which the rear pillars 1 are also pivoted, control links 13, 14, 17 connecting the cant rail sections and the rear pillar and hoop sticks 9, and 12, A single-acting hydraulic cylinder 22 and ram 23 are connected as shown and are operated by a hand pump 27 operable by the driver, a supply tank 29 or accumulator and a control valve 32 being provided. Fig. 4 shows a cylinder arrangement provided with a spring 26 to counterbalance the weight of the hood members and a control valve 34 which may be operated by the driver or may be operably connected say to the brake lever so that the erection of the hood is prevented when the car is travelling. Fig. 5 shows a pneumatic arrangement in which a valve 36 is open when the brake lever 37 is " off " to prevent operation of the cylinder 22 and piston 23. The pump may be power driven and may also connect with a jacking arrangement for the wheels. An electric motor may be used to drive the pump.
