Abstract

A composition for bleaching hair is prepared by the admixture of an oxygen liberating substance such as hydrogen peroxide and compounds thereof, and per salts with buffered ammonium salts or buffered salts of organic bases, the oxygen liberating substance being present at least in amount equivalent to 3 per cent by weight of hydrogen peroxide and the solution having a pH of 7 to 9. Particular oxidizing agents mentioned are hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen peroxide urea, perborates and percarbonates. The bleaching composition above is preferably used in the presence of high molecular transparent swelling agents such as polysaccharides and albuminous materials. Specified materials are starch tragacanth, methyl cellulose, gum arabic, gelatine, casein, and dextrine. Wetting agents such as highly sulphonated oils, fatty alcohols, and alcohol sulphonates may also be present. When dealing with porous hair the composition also contains waxes, lipoids such as lecithin and cholesterin, fatty alcohols, and similar fat materials. Examples of compositions are: (1) starch, tragacanth, synthetic wax, ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, tertiary sodium phosphate, sodium lauryl sulphonate and hydrogen peroxide; (2) sodium perborate, ammonium chloride, the sodium salt of oleyl-methyl-taurinic acid, potato flour; (3) methyl cellulose, tragacanth, trisodium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, trimethyl ammonium chloride and hydrogen peroxide urea.
