[Class 39 (i)] To develop electrical signals from a still picture, the picture is applied in chequer or dotted form to a screen scanned by a cathode-ray so that the secondary emission obtained from each element of the picture under bombardment by the ray depends on the tone value of the picture at the element and develops signals representative of half-tones of the picture. The screen 15, Fig. 1, scanned by the cathode-ray may have conical recesses X, Fig. 3, of depth corresponding to the local tone values of the picture, the secondary emission varying with the angle of incidence of the ray on the sides of the depression. The secondary emission flows to an anode 14 surrounding the cathode-ray and formed by a coating on the wall of the tube. The signals appear across the resistance 17. In modifications, depressions corresponding in area or number to the tone values are filled with carbon or other material having a different secondary emission from that of the aluminium plate 15.
