Abstract

465,592. Charging batteries ; heating water by electricity. CALDWELL, P. G. Oct. 13, 1936, No. 25450/35. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XI, XXVIII, and XXXVI] In a system for charging the battery of a motor vehicle and heating the cooling water from A.C. or D.C. mains using a rectifier as required, the supply plug is interlocked with a switch so as to cut off the battery from the vehicle circuits. The heater resistance is so tapped that the heating and charging rates may be changed for operation on either the higher (200) or lower (100) voltage ranges. The switch arm y is spring biassed so as normally to cover the plug socket b2, the battery terminals x<4>, x<5> being then connected to poles x<1>, x<2> leading to the car dynamo, lights &c. ; but when the mains plug is inserted into socket b; the switch arm is moved to break this connection. Current is supplied from socket terminals b4, b4 to some or all of the heater windings o in series with the rectifier C and the battery B. Connections may be made to the heater terminals q, r, s, t, u in several ways according to whether the mains voltage is in the neighbourhood of 100 or 200 volts ; also to give full or half charging rates. The heating element consists of resistance wire wound on a sheet of mica or embedded in manganese oxide, magnesium oxide, fireclay, or other insulating material, the whole being enclosed in a metal tube secured in position by a dished flange p which is clamped between the end of the main casing j and the terminal cover. A deflecting plate l of high conductivity metal is disposed above the horizontal heater element so that water can only pass upwards beyond the ends of the plate to an outlet m towards the centre of the plate. The pipes attached to the inlet i and outlet m are connected to the usual radiator hose by cutting a hole in the hose and clamping the wall of the hose between inner and outer dished washers d, e on the ends of the connection. A switch s allows operation of the heater without charging of the battery. Specification 344,911 is referred to.
