[Class 120 (iii)] A cop - winding machine is provided with means for collecting the completed cops and sorting them according to accidentally-occurring differences in diameter, each spindle being provided with a trap into which the doffed cop passes and the trap either retaining cops exceeding a predetermined diameter for removal by hand and allowing cops below that diameter to pass into a box below the spindle or engaging cops of different diameters in different ways according to the diameter and conveying them to a delivery station where they are delivered to separate receptacles according to the manner in which they are held by the trap. As shown in Fig. 1 each trap is formed by a pair of downwardly converging guides x<1>, x<2>, the space between them at the bottom allowing cops below a predetermined diameter to fall into a box below the spindle 5 ; the distance between the guides may be adjusted by a screwed rod 11 and the guides may be slotted. In a modification, the trap is formed by a pair of rollers, one or both of which are eccentrically mounted so that the gap between the rollers may be adjusted by movement of a rack engaging gear-wheels on the axles of the rollers. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the traps are formed by parallel plates x<3>, x<4> mounted on a conveyer 33 and having diverging jaws x<1>, x<2>; cops of a predetermined diameter fall between the plates x<3>, x' and are carried by the conveyer to the end of the machine where they are discharged into a box 10, while cops above the predetermined diameter are carried forward by the jaws x<1>, x<2> and engaged by an inclined shoot 43 by which they are delivered into a box 32. In a modification, the traps are formed with additional diverging jaws so as to sort the cops into three or more groups. In the form shown in Fig. 9, the traps are formed by elastic jaws 65, 66, the jaw 65 being fixed to the conveyer 33 and the jaw being pivoted thereto so that it can be opened against the action of a spring; cops of a diameter above a predetermined diameter are gripped tightly by the jaws and carried by the conveyer to a position above the box 32 where an abutment 68 engages a finger 67 on the jaw 66 and opens it to release the cop while the cops of predetermined diameter-loosely held in the trap-are discharged into a box 10. In a modification, a pair of spaced abutments engage the ends of the cops of larger diameter and force them out of the jaws as they arrive over the box 32.
